The HIGHLANDER
antenna is now handmade by craftsman, Terry Ventoura, who worked on the
development of the original antenna.
With assistance from Philip from Venros Aerials who perfected the all weather coating the WANDER LEAD connections and engraving of the antennas, giving the TALKABOUT ANTENNAS the operational and aesthetic appeal with a high quality performance specification.
This antenna is in extensive use inthe remote parts of Australia where 2 way radio communication over long distances is vital.
The HIGHLANDER has already been road
tested by Richard Newton ( G0RSN ) of Practical Wireless and in this review
he made these comments:-
"
The antenna looks wonderful, right away it gives the impression of sheer
quality, if anything looks like it should work, The Highlander does........."
" No expense
spared here either, the WANDER LEAD connections are superior banana type
plugs, they are gold plated and make a good solid connection into the gold
plated sockets {This antenna just oozes quality }......"
" The brass
fittings are lightly brushed. The tuning stub is held in place by a tapered
threaded tube, divided into quarters and tightened by a tapered brass cap........."
Richard also
had this to say about the HIGHLANDERS performance:-
"
The HIGHLANDER was great for tuning. In fact it hardly needed tuning, I
hardly had to touch the tuning stub and every band had an excellent SWR.
The highest was about 1.9:1 however , after a tweak with the tuning stub
this came down to 1.4:1. This was in gale force winds and driving rain
to boot.........."
"
One thing I must tell you about the HIGHLANDER is the band coverage. Even
with a dedicated whip for 7 megahertz I found the bandwidth of the antenna
was about 20 KHZ and then i had to retune. Not so with the HIGHLANDER,
i tuned to 7.050MHZ and had a working SWR which was practically constant
over the whole band!........."
" ( THE REAL
TEST )... Lets face it.... ease of tuning and a good swr are not necessarily
the sign of a good antenna so it was time to put the HIGHLANDER to
the real test......using the IC-706Mk1 set on output power of 7W, this
equates to approximately 70W from the radio. We didnt use the preamp.......We
heard an almighty pile up, again on 18 Megs. The station with all the interest
was TF3AO. I called "stroke mobile", "stroke mobile"! I thought my efforts
were in vain, not so! Seli TF3AO gave us a 5 and 6 report from his station
in Reykjavik, Iceland! This was a distance of approx 1785 km. So the HIGHLANDER
smashed its first pile up.........."

The HIGHLANDER design has received an inovation award in Australia for its oustanding performance.
This HIGHLANDER gives its user multi-band, high performance transmition and reception of RF signals on 6 meter to 80 meter bands, and all in one antenna, so there is no longer a need to carry with you a selection of costly antennas for each individual band, or indeed having to mount numerous antennas on your vehicle to cover the bands you intend to use.
The HIGHLANDER antenna works very effectively on all specified bands and is manufactured in fibreglass, with pre tuned helical copper winding and is coated in specially developed epoxy resin for weather resistance and durability.
The HIGHLANDER is easily adjustable
via a plug in WANDER LEAD, which is gold plated for maximum connection
efficiency and has a tuning tip to give the lowest VSWR possible on whichever
band you intend to use.
Band selection is easily done with the use of the Gold
Plated WANDER LEAD and tapping points, taking the WANDER LEAD out all together
gives you the 80m band coverage and other bands are selected by plugging
in the lead to which ever band you require. As you can see, each band is
clearly engraved and is easy to set up.
The HIGHLANDER is easily mounted on any vehicle via its sturdy 3/8th inch UNF stud base, giving rugged reliability in all mobile conditions, The resin coating protects the vital areas of the antenna from damage and provides an aesthetic appeal to this amazing antenna. As you can see the antenna has a tunable tip giving the operator easy adjustment to get the lowest possible VSWR.
